A No Sew Hank Mask: A DIY Solution for Staying Safe Out There

Here at EDCa, we are committed to staying safe during this crazy time. We also want to share any cool tips/tricks/hacks to make staying safe easier. The CDC is recommending wearing some sort of face covering during any outing where social distancing might be tough. Today, we are going to quickly show (and include instructions) of how to make a DIY face mask using nothing but the hank in your pocket and two rubber bands.Remember to stay safe, stay sane, and stay prepared.

For the visual learners:

Step By step instructions.

1. Lay your hank on a flat surface.

2. Fold the top and bottom until the width of the folded hank matches up with your preferred size (since this is the part that will cover your face).
* If you have an N95 filter, you can insert it between the folds.

3. Grab your rubber band (or any elastic loop) slide it on the end.  Pull some of the fabric through the loop to make a fabric flap and fold that flap toward the center of the mask (on the side that will face your face).
* If you know how to sew, you can sew the fabric flap down to the mask for a permanent attachment of the elastic loop.

3a* Optional. This one is all preference: before you add the loop, you can fold the ends like a paper airplane to make the mask narrower near your ear.

4. Hold the mask at the folded fabric flaps, and put it over your ears.  The pressure from the elastic loops and the fabric flaps against your face will keep the mask from coming undone.
